Vegetarian snacks instead of bitterballen, but the alcohol-free New Year's drink still seems a long way off

The alcohol-free liquor store in Tilburg is doing good business. Companies are also interested in a drink without booze, but there is no revolution yet. 'Alcohol is still seen as a social binding agent.'

'Cincin!' Milly and Meggie van Loon, mother and daughter, look at each other briefly before knocking back a crystal glass of red wine. Then another pour, and another, and another.

It's the middle of the day, but no one in this liquor store will be surprised if people are drinking heavily. The entire arsenal of drinks at World of NIX in Tilburg is alcohol-free. And that's exactly what Milly and Meggie have come for, because they are participating in Dry January, the annual challenge to kick off the first month of the year fresh (and therefore without alcohol). Although Milly is postponing it for two weeks, 'because my husband will be 60 then and that calls for a drink'.
